Song & Faith destroy fear and evil. In Haiti a chior sings loud and Poud!

Where do people find solace, hope, and joy amidst local ongoing societal collapse? In church, of course – through song and fellowship. The church choir in the Haitian village of Dano is an uplifting testament to this.

Earlier this year, the church choir in Dano celebrated its 22nd anniversary. Dano is located just over seven miles from Haiti’s capital, 85 percent of which has been taken over by criminal gangs. Our daughter organization, Star of Hope, runs a school in close cooperation with the local congregation.

Despite the dangers, the leaders of Star of Hope Haiti traveled to Dano to attend the anniversary. Among the guests were also leaders of schools and churches in the surrounding villages. The Debora Choir was founded in February 2003 by Pastor Walas Edmond. It consists of talented and dedicated women who, through music, contribute to evangelization in Dano, both in the church and in the school. “Through their voices, they are committed to making Christ and his gospel known to all, and thus place themselves in the service of the church,” says Tony Boursiquot, field manager for Star of Hope Haiti.

Many of the choir members are either teachers or parents of students at the Dano school. Some choir members also teach the Bible’s message to the children through the Tent Mission’s project “Sunday School All Week.” “The Debora Choir does its utmost to support the church and the school in its evangelical work, through songs and many other activities,” says Tony Boursiquot. “They play an important role in both the school and the church through their evangelistic mission.”
